THANTHONNI THURUTHU
Water, water, everywhere water, no water to drink – this was the condition of the island
called Thanthonithuruth while I visited there four and half years ago. This island is situated
1km. away from
bizarre incident. It was a festival day for 87 families residing there- festival of the lone
temple in island.
As a part of the festival Kalamezhuthu with songs was going on. It was midnight. The floor
was decorated with multi-coloured paintings. The atmosphere was filled with festive mood
and songs to the accompaniment of folk musical instruments. Unexpectedly water rushed to
the compound but the devotees completed their programmes by making sand bunds.
The major problem baffling the inhabitants is the surge of water during high tide
between 12 midnight and 6 in the morning. The villagers complain that the tide is very much
higher than in earlier days. Sometimes unexpected surge would carry away cooked food
with the pots.
