CUTTING THE TREES

CUTTING THE TREES

A protest meet against the move to cut down several trees for constructing a building for High court Bar Association was organized by Environmental Protection Unity. In the inaugural address of the meet, Pro. M.K.Prasad pointed out that the old approach of the British Engineers of uprooting even the last blade of grass on earth before constructing an edifice should be done away with.

The unity stressed that the breaking of law under the nose of the apex court cannot be tolerated while the building can be raised even without felling a single tree. The meet was concluded by planting trees in the high court premises.

THANTHONNI THURUTHU

Water, water, everywhere water, no water to drink – this was the condition of the island
called Thanthonithuruth while I visited there four and half years ago. This island is situated
1km. away from Ernakulam Town and extends to 110 acres. Last year there occurred a
bizarre incident. It was a festival day for 87 families residing there- festival of the lone
temple in island.
As a part of the festival Kalamezhuthu with songs was going on. It was midnight. The floor
was decorated with multi-coloured paintings. The atmosphere was filled with festive mood
and songs to the accompaniment of folk musical instruments. Unexpectedly water rushed to
the compound but the devotees completed their programmes by making sand bunds.
The major problem baffling the inhabitants is the surge of water during high tide
between 12 midnight and 6 in the morning. The villagers complain that the tide is very much
higher than in earlier days. Sometimes unexpected surge would carry away cooked food
with the pots.

SLAUGHTER HOUSE WASTE : NO ACTION TAKEN

SLAUGHTER HOUSE :DESPITE RULES,NO ACTION TAKEN

When the people of the state are tired of the menace of waste from slaughter house, It is not the absence of stringent that stops the authorities from acting .Even though the Kerala panchayat Raj [slaughter houses and meat stalls]Rules have sufficient provisions to deal with the issue, the implementation seems to be weak.

Disposing of a Public Interest Litigation filed by the proper channel, the high court 2005 issued directive to the local self government to consider the inclusion of chicken stall in the purview of the rules. Subsequently, the Panchayat Deputy director issued an order to the local bodies to cancel the license of chicken and meat stalls which do not have proper waste treatment facility and submit an action taken report.

The slaughter houses using Rivers, lake, and public places for dumping their waste daily and in the weekends, the quantity of the waste will be ten times higher than week days. It is evident that hardly any slaughter house in the state has waste treatment facility. In spite of the stringent rules, local bodies are occasionally slapping a fine on defaulters who dump waste in public places
